Care instructions

How often should I wash my Yoga Mat?

As a basic guide, you should be giving your yoga mats a complete clean every couple of months if you use it 2-3 times a week or every month if you practice yoga 4-5 times a week.

Apart from giving it a complete clean, you should be practicing regular maintenance after each yoga session.

This will not only extend the life of your mat, but will keep it from harbouring bacteria, which will result in a smelly, stinky mat.

How do I perform regular maintenance on my mat?

Washing your hands and feet before each session helps decrease the amount of dirt on your mat - after all your hands and feet will touch your mat constantly and these body areas tend to be dirty!

After each yoga session, wipe your mats with baby wipe or a cloth and warm water.

Always hang your mat out to air after each session, at least for a couple of hours.

How do perform a complete clean on my mat?

Mad Yoga suggests ideally hand washing your mats whenever you can to prolong its life. However, we understand that sometimes our busy lives leave no time to lovingly hand-wash our yoga mats - so we have made our mats so durable that they are machine-washable!

How do I hand-wash my mat?

  1. Soak your mat. Submerge your yoga mat in a bathtub or large bucket using a solution of warm water and a mild detergent and allow it to soak for 15 minutes. This helps dislodge any dirt, oils, as well as any odours.
  2. Once your mat has soaked for 15 minutes, use a soft cloth to wipe the mat, still keeping it in the warm water solution. Make sure you wipe it gently, the soaking would have dislodged most of the dirt, so you don’t need to scrub too hard.
  3. Rinse your mat in clean water. Drain the bathtub/bucket and rinse the mat with warm, clean water. Ensure you rinse all the soap off, as soap residue can leave a slippery film on your mat.
  4. Shake off your mat to remove any surface water. Then lay a clean, dry towel on top of the mat and roll the two together to squeeze out the remaining moisture.
  5. Hang to completely dry.

How do I machine-wash my mat?

  1. Make sure your mat is alone in all its glory in your washing machine.
  2. Set your washing machine on gentle cycle and use cold water (the warm water setting on washing machines can sometimes be too hot, it would be best to avoid that).
  3. Use ¼ of a scoop of a mild detergent. If your washing machine has a detergent drawer, place the detergent in there. Otherwise, mix it with a cup of warm water and pour in once there is enough water to cover the mat. This just avoids the detergent touching the mat directly in its raw form, which may cause some damage.
  4. Use the lowest spin cycle.
  5. Ensure all the soap has come off, as soap residue can leave a slippery film on your mat. If it hasn’t, it might pay to put it through another rinse cycle.
  6. Shake off your mat to remove any surface water. Then lay a clean, dry towel on top of the mat and roll the two together to squeeze out the remaining moisture.
  7. Hang to completely dry.
